Interview With Author Matt Brown
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, educator, and risk-management practitioner focused on resilience, decision-making, and preparation before crisis. My work sits at the intersection of systems thinking, neuroscience of attention, Stoic and Biblical philosophy, and lived experience. Forged for the Fall is my first book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Forged for the Fall. It was inspired by a serious motorcycle accident that forced me to confront how preparation—or the lack of it—shapes outcomes under stress. While the accident is part of the story, the deeper inspiration came from years of teaching and consulting in risk and leadership. The book focuses less on recovery after crisis and more on building practical frameworks before adversity hits.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do most of my thinking away from the keyboard—often while walking or running. I’ll work through ideas mentally, then sit down and write in focused bursts. I’m also disciplined about stopping mid-thought so I know exactly where to pick up next time.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been shaped by Stoic writers like Marcus Aurelius and Seneca, modern thinkers such as Viktor Frankl and Angela Duckworth, and Biblical narratives that explore endurance, stewardship, and wisdom under pressure. Those influences show up less as citations and more as posture and perspective.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently developing companion material that expands the frameworks introduced in Forged for the Fall, along with shorter essays and reflections that apply those ideas to leadership, work, and everyday decision-making.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I prefer direct, relationship-based promotion—sharing the book through personal conversations, recommendations, and thoughtful online presence rather than heavy marketing. My website serves as the primary hub, giving readers context before they ever decide to purchase.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the book you wish had existed when you needed it. Don’t chase trends or try to sound impressive. Clarity, honesty, and usefulness matter far more than volume or velocity.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Prepare when it’s quiet. Most people wait until pressure arrives to build strength, but resilience is forged long before it’s tested.
What are you reading now?
I tend to rotate between philosophy, leadership, and theology. I’m always revisiting the Stoics, alongside contemporary work on attention, discipline, and meaning.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue expanding this body of work—less as standalone books and more as an evolving set of ideas, frameworks, and reflections that help people think more clearly and act more deliberately under pressure.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, the Bible, Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, and a well-worn notebook—because reflection matters as much as reading.
