Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
To date I have written 3 standalone novels: Half a Person, Cookies and Double Bad Things. I am also working on a new series of crime/vigilante justice thrillers, based around Acid Vanilla, a sharp-tongued professional killer, who is is trying to escape a past that won’t let her go. I have written the first 2 books in the series (Out in Spring/Summer 2020) plus a prequel that will be released to my newsletter at the same time as book 1.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Acid Vanilla was inspired by my daughter being born in many ways. I realised I wanted to write something with a female lead that she could be proud to be associated with when she was older. I set out to create a strong character who was layered, a little broken, a modern anti-hero and also a woman but her sex not being an integral part of the character.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really, unless you count writing notes on my phone in the middle of the night.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Bukowski, Elmore Leonard, Hubert Selby Jnr, John Niven, Irvine Welsh, Robert Crais, Chuck Palahniuk. The list goes on….
What are you working on now?
The Acid Vanilla series. I plan on releasing the first 3 novels plus the sequel in 2020.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m just finding my feet with using methods other than social media to promote my books. But Awesome Gang seems like, well, an awesome gang to work with…
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing. Try to stay in the moment with it until it’s finished, then worry about what happens next. You can’t market half a book so get the damn thing written before you think about anything else. And write what you love. If you don’t love what you do, its going to be a slog.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Bukowski, when asked his advice on someone trying to be a writer… ‘Don’t try.’ I think that’s important to remember. Its about the doing first and foremost. You can call yourself a writer all you want, but writing is a verb not a noun. And action is the only thing that gets a book finished.
What are you reading now?
The Warehouse by Rob Hart
What’s next for you as a writer?
As above, launching and promoting my new Acid Vanilla series.
