Interview With Author McKinley Aspen
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written many books. My current focus is on my trilogy “Shadows in the Wind” of which book one came out in 2022 (July 7th launch date – book title: PRAESIDIUM) and book two came out in 2023 (August 8th launch date – book title: COGITATIO).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Cogitatio: Shadows in the Wind – Book Two
The word COGITATIO means REFLECTION in Latin. The original cover artwork showcases this as well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write everything down that comes bubbling out of me, and then go back and try and make sense of where the starting point might be. It allows me to be more creative with the story, and sometimes I find that where I start is even a surprise to me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I absolutely love Phyllis Green (Nantucket Summer) and writers such as Brian Panowich (Like Lions), Jane Enright (Butter Side Up) and Amy S. Peele (Cut/Match/Hold Medical Mysteries). I am also a huge fan of Iain S. Thomas and Sophie Hannah.
What are you working on now?
A spy novel and a few nonfiction things
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a very personal promotion style. Those on my mailing list experience ability to communicate directly with me. I love to promote through author events – book signings and conferences, etc. It is always better to stand in front of people and discuss your book!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep trying. Everybody gets told “it’s not right for my list” and that is very well true. But, there is a place for you and your writing. You are not defined by people saying “it’s not right for my list”, rather remember how unique your writing is and keep pushing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There is no right or wrong, there just is.
What are you reading now?
George Weinstein – Return to Hardscrabble Road
Jenn Henry – Resilience: A different kind of strong
Maggie Paredes – On a Rooftop in Beijing
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m not sure. My dog, Otis, is getting very busy with his own book reviews so who knows – I might be helping him out someday soon!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Black Beauty
