Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a lost journalism student who decided the characters in her heard were too persistent to ignore, so I started writing their stories.
I have published four books so far, with a fifth coming in June.
I am based on the Gold Coast, Australia but my heart belongs to New York.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called Breaking Down.
It’s the fourth book of my Rocking Racers series and was inspired by the title actually. Most of my books are “Breaking (something)” so I was trying to think about what would go with that. Breaking Down obviously popped into my head and I built the story around that. I didn’t mean for it to be as emotional as it was, but the title demanded it and I liked the direction.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I handwrite, which in this day and age is really unusual. It’s a labour intensive way to do things, but I find the story flows better that way. It’s also an excuse to indulge in my love of pens and notebooks!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tijan, Cambria Hebert, Sarah J Maas, Jay Kristoff have all been massive influences for me. One day I hope to emulate their success.
What are you working on now?
I literally finished the first draft of a M/M YA novel yesterday. i think my voice lends itself to YA really well so I’d love to write more of those.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Yours! Haha, and I’m finding Instagram to be an increasingly popular option nowadays. The whole bookstagram community is huge and on such a visual site like Instagram, those pictures really stand out.
Also, good old faithful Facebook.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing. Don’t listen to anybody who tells you not to, just do it. Be true to you, to your characters.
Also, learn how to market yourself, you’re going to need it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
To take a break. Sometimes if things aren’t working then step away, clear your head, then tackle it again.
Oh and save everything!
What are you reading now?
i just finished Obsidian by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman which was awesome. I have a TBR longer than the Nile, so I’m hoping to get through some of that, someday.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a short spin-off I’m writing then it’s back into my Rocking Racers series.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Never night, Jay Kristoff
A Court of Mist and Fury, Sarah J Maas,
Gemina, Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman,
Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
