Interview With Author Melodie Berg
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an avid writer and ‘published’ my first books at ten (see laminated). I’ve always loved writing, but never really considered publishing until my now late husband made me promise to publish at least one, as one of his dying wishes. I did what he asked and published my first book, Rune’s Magik, under the pen name Mel D. MacKenzie. I’m currently writing about twenty-seven books (yay ADHD!), but I have only published two so far. Hopefully, three books soon!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent published book is called “Haunting Harmony”. Like all of my books, it was inspired by a dream, much like the actual plot of the book!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure what someone might consider “unusual”… I do make a habit of turning a lot of my vivid dreams into book ideas, which is why I currently have a list of twenty-seven more books I want to write. They’re all sorted and categorized based on genre, and they all have detailed summaries.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
C.S. Lewis was the author who was a huge influencer of my writing imagination when I was a child. I LOVED The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. When I was older, I discovered David Gemmell. Besides his AMAZING books and compelling writing, his ‘simplistic’ writing style was what made me realize that someone like me could actually be a published writer.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working to finish the second part of the Rune series. I published Rune’s Magik nearly a decade ago, and I’m close to finally finishing Rune’s Gift.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still working on that, honestly! Facebook has been my main source of promotion, but I’m starting to branch out to other avenues. I’ll find out what works best and let you know!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write. Stop questioning if you’re good enough or if your ideas are good enough, and just write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It came from a movie, actually! “No thinking. That comes later. You write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is to write, not to think!”
What are you reading now?
I’m so focused on writing, I haven’t had time to read.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to finish the Rune Trilogy, throw in another romance or mystery, and then get started on a seven-part series that I’ve been writing since I was twelve years old. I’m talking to publishers for that one, instead of self-publishing. That series is my baby. I want to do it right!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe – Sword in the Storm – Midnight Falcon – Ravenheart
