Interview With Author Mia MP
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, poet, and photographer, deeply inspired by the intersection of art and emotion. My writing is often influenced by my multicultural background, based in USA with roots in Cuba, Spain, and Africa, which brings a unique perspective to my work. I have a passion for blending poetry and visual art to create a multisensory experience for my readers.
So far, I’ve written five books. The most recent, At the Same Time, is the first in a trilogy titled Inner Journey. This series combines my poetry with my fine art photography to explore themes of healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. Writing, for me, is a way to connect with others and create stories that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is At the Same Time. It’s the first book in my Inner Journey series, which blends poetry and fine art photography to create a multisensory experience of healing, self-discovery, and personal growth.
The inspiration for this book comes from my own personal journey of healing and transformation. I wanted to share the emotional and spiritual growth I’ve experienced, while also offering readers a space to reflect on their own paths to peace and renewal. Combining poetry with photography allowed me to create a deeper emotional connection and offer a unique way for readers to engage with the themes of resilience, time, and self-empowerment. It’s a celebration of the transformative power of art, and the healing that can come from embracing both the light and dark aspects of our personal journeys.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
It all begins with coffee— “I drink coffee, then I exist,” as I like to say! It’s my ritual to start the day. The warmth of the coffee helps me clear my mind and prepare for writing. Once I’ve had that first cup, I feel like I’m truly ready to dive into my work.
Another habit I have is combining writing with photography. When I’m working on a poem, I often find myself inspired by images, or vice versa. I like to have my camera nearby, and sometimes I’ll stop writing to take a photograph, or the photograph will spark a new poem. I think the blend of both creative outlets helps me stay inspired and focused.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Several authors and books have profoundly influenced my writing. One of the earliest influences, when I was just a child, was Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. Its themes of innocence, discovery, and the importance of looking beyond what is visible resonated deeply with me and shaped how I approach storytelling and symbolism in my work.
In the realm of fiction, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings series sparked my love for world-building and exploring complex, layered narratives. The richness of his imaginary worlds and the emotional depth of his characters taught me the importance of creating immersive settings that reflect the inner journeys of my characters.
Lastly, Virginia Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness writing style has had a lasting effect on me, especially in my more introspective and experimental works. Her ability to explore the inner workings of the human mind inspired me to think more deeply about the emotional landscapes of my characters and to embrace the complexity of human emotions in my storytelling.
What are you working on now?
Now I am working on the continuation of my Inner Journey series as I write in English and in Spanish, my books come out in both languages. At the Same Time, is the first book in a trilogy that blends my poetry with my photography, but I have two more books coming out. As Novalis once said, “Poetry heals the wounds inflicted by reason,” and this series is my way of helping, inspiring, and reminding readers that they are not alone in their quest for peace and renewal.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social Media, I actively engage with my readers on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. These allow me to share behind-the-scenes glimpses of my writing process, insights about my work, and personal reflections.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I must say, reading is rich source of learning and inspiration. Always edit your manuscript thoroughly and don’t hesitate to reedit as many times as necessary. Self-criticism and listening to feedback from others are essential for developing quality writing. Avoid comparing yourself to other authors; everyone’s journey is unique. Believe in yourself, everyone has a story to tell, and your book could inspire others’ lives.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard, my grandma once told me: “Stay true to your voice and your story.” This reminds me that authenticity is essential, both in writing and in life. It has helped me trust in my own voice and style, knowing that my experiences, emotions, and viewpoints are valuable. This advice encourages me to write honestly, never shying away from expressing what feels true to me, even if it doesn’t always align with mainstream expectations. It’s a reminder that the most lasting and impactful work often comes from a place of personal authenticity.
What are you reading now?
I am rereading Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry is deeply atmospheric and explores themes of darkness, love, and the supernatural, all of which can evoke a powerful emotional response.
What’s next for you as a writer?
In addition to the series Inner Journey that has two more books coming out, I have several writing and photography projects with some magazines, and I’m also working on a psychological thriller that I’ve been putting aside for a while. It’s a genre I’m excited to explore, and I can’t wait to return to it when the time feels right.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The first book I read at the age of 4, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien the book that first introduced me to the world of fantasy. The rich world-building, the complex characters, and the epic journey always draw me back. Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz a novel my best friend gave me. And At the Same Time, the first book I published.
