Interview With Author Michael Geczi
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author based in Scottsdale, Arizona, after formerly living in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Hong Kong, and Moscow. A former journalist, corporate executive, consultant, and university instructor, I’ve written nine books. “The Serial Killer Anthology” includes five psychological thrillers: “Then She Died,” “The Compass Killer,” “Hunting a Cat in Dogtown,” “Killer Dead, Victim Alive,” and “The Deadly Samaritan.” “The Revenge, Unhinged Series” includes “Pointless” and “Soulless.” I also wrote the inspirational, lightly speculative novel “Equinox.” Early in my career, I published an investment advice book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Soulless” is my latest book. I wanted to explore how out-of-control revenge affected “the bad guys as well as the good guys” and inevitably ended up in disastrous outcomes. My inspiration was partly reality, and partly because the premise opened up an opportunity with interesting plot and character development.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not certain these are unusual, but I write while sitting on my living room sofa binge-watching old shows. I also don’t write in the early evenings. My best times are middle of the night and early morning — with an occasional late afternoon thrown in.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Elmore Leonard, Philip Roth, Jonathan Franzen, Thomas Harris, James Ellroy, and Michael Connelly,
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the third book of my second series, “The Revenge, Unhinged Series.” The first two books are “Pointless” and Soulless.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My Author Newsletter and direct communications with readers and reviewers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read. Read. Read. Write. Write. Write. Your completed first draft is only the first step.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Elmore Leonard’s famous writing advice: “If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it,”
What are you reading now?
I am mostly reading political biographies now.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Two things: Complete my work in progress, and continue to experiment with “meta narration” and Free Indirect Discourse (FID), where I can blend narrator and character voices.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Killshot” (Elmore Leonard); “The Cold Six Thousand” (James Ellroy); “Freedom” (Jonathan Franzen), and “The Human Stain” (Philip Roth).
