Interview With Author Michelle Whetsell
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an artist/writer. I loved both writing and drawing ever since my childhood, and I always enjoyed and admired literature as I learned it in school. Drawing is my passion as well, in which I am also self-taught. I drew and designed the illustrations at the end of my latest book as well as its cover. So far, this book, a novella, is the only book I have written, but I have also written a book of short stories that is not yet published. I really want readers to enjoy my works and feel something in their words.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is “Verwaist aus Missbrauch,” which means “Orphaned from Abuse” in German. The inspiration of translating the title to German was my German heritage.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do not have many unusual writing habits, but lots of times I step aside and listen to my music before I begin writing again. This occasionally helps me feel more inspired as I write. I love many genres of music, but symphonic and power metal are my favorites, and they sometimes fill me with more inspiration because of their deep, powerful words and meanings.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The classic literature seemed to have influenced me the most, with authors like Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, John Bunyan, and so on. I greatly admired all of their works.
What are you working on now?
I am currently only shuffling through ideas, but I am considering finishing another novella.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Bookbub and Written Word Media seem to be descent websites, but social media such as Instagram can help as well, where you can share content and quotes from your book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The main advice I have for new authors is to have patience and use your best efforts. As a new author, especially an indie author, getting recognized is a huge struggle, but you just have to try your best.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never get discouraged is the best advice I have heard. Discouragement is very common, but you can’t let it take over your efforts.
What are you reading now?
I am not reading anything at this moment, but I have considered several books. I enjoy a good fantasy book that features horror themes and religious meanings.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I suppose at this moment my focus as a writer is marketing my latest book the best I can with hopes to get recognized.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I suppose I would bring a copy of Narnia, perhaps the Lord of the Rings, and maybe Pilgrim’s Progress
