Interview With Author Mor Shavit
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
The Art of Being Pooky is my debut book, but I’ve been creating art and stories for years -from painting and stained glass to graphic design and music. This book is the first time I’ve brought all my passions together into one project.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Art of Being Pooky, inspired by my cat Pooky, my love of art history, and the universal search for identity and belonging.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often write with my cat next to me – sometimes she literally walks across the keyboard and adds her own ‘paw prints’ to the text. It keeps me playful and reminds me not to take myself too seriously.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been inspired by a wide range of authors whose works mix depth, imagination, and humanity. J.D. Salinger and Charlotte Brontë influenced me with their explorations of inner worlds and complex emotions. Émile Zola and Charles Dickens shaped my appreciation for social commentary and vivid storytelling. Gerald Durrell sparked my love for animals and nature, while Douglas Adams showed me how humor and wit can make even the strangest journeys unforgettable. Stephen King taught me about atmosphere and tension, and Lewis Carroll reminded me that playfulness and imagination can open doors to entirely new worlds. All of these voices, in different ways, have influenced how I approach writing The Art of Being Pooky.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m focusing on sharing The Art of Being Pooky with readers and expanding its creative universe with music and interactive elements. At the same time, I’ve started working on a new project for adults – a novel called Queen of Corona. It’s a dramedy that mixes humor, sharp observations, and emotional depth, exploring human connection and disconnection in today’s world.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I combine social media with creative extras. Instagram and Facebook allow me to share visuals of Pooky’s art, while interactive websites like Gumroad and my bonus site give readers music, stickers, and games connected to the book. For me, it’s about creating an ecosystem around the story, not just a single listing.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Creativity is messy and imperfect – and that’s part of its beauty.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.” It reminds me that every journey is unique, and progress is more important than perfection.
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m reading Villette by Charlotte Brontë. I admire her ability to blend deep emotion with sharp observation, and her characters always feel so alive and complex.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Alongside sharing The Art of Being Pooky with readers worldwide, I’m developing my next book – an adult dramedy titled Queen of Corona. It blends humor, sharp observation, and social critique with a very human story about loneliness and resilience.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë – for strength and independence.
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger – for honesty and reflection.
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – for humor in impossible situations.
The Asterix comic series – because laughter, wit, and adventure are just as essential for survival as food and water.
