Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Irish but in my quest to get away from the terrible weather, I have somehow ended up in Kazakhstan where the weather is even worse. In summer it reaches +40°C, in winter it plunges to -40°C. I don’t mind the +40°C! I have two books (short stories) already out and there are 3 more in the works, which will be arriving later in 2021.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I’m currently working on a “light dark fantasy” or “cozy horror” story, about three identical sisters who don’t believe in magic, despite being surrounded by it. It’s a follow up to an earlier short story (and I’ve already got the first draft of their third adventure ready!).
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. No unusual habits. No strange thoughts. No voices in my head. Nothing. I am completely normal. Completely. Normal.
What are you working on now?
I’m sketching out a different type of anthology for later in the year, which is a little bit dark, a little bit literary. I also want to take part in NaNoWriMo this month, I know exactly the story I’m going to write!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have a blog in my own website where I publish a new piece of flash fiction every Thursday, that’s a great way to get people used to my stories!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the books you want to read. Learn to touch type and dictate. Dictation is incredibly hard if you’re not naturally a talker. I can’t think and talk at the same time, so I’m finding dictation a real challenge.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write the books you want to read. You’re guaranteed one reader (assuming the writing’s good!).
What are you reading now?
I always have several books on the go. Currently Jane Yolen’s The Emerald Circus, Catriona Ward’s The Last House On Needless Street, the Weird Dream Society anthology and Adam L.G. Nevill’s Cries from the Crypt as well as To The Hermitage by Malcolm Bradbury.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More books? And maybe even a play if I can. Just because.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
We All Hear Stories In The Dark by Robert Shearman. It’s 3 volumes, 101 stories over almost 1,800 pages. That’ll keep me going for a while. The Third Policeman by Flann O’Brien would also have to come with me, it’s an incredible read, with all sorts of layers and styles. And then give me How To Invent Everything by Ryan North, which is the most entertaining guide to kickstarting your own civilisation you’ll ever read.
