Interview With Author Muhammad Atique
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a passionate writer, researcher, and educator with over 15 years of experience in the media and academia, specializing in Digital Media, Public Policy, and Communication. I’ve worked in several international settings, including the US, China, and the Pakistan, which has enriched my perspective on global media trends and digital culture. As for my writing, I have authored one book so far. My first book, Digitally Hijacked: The Age of Influence: How Social Media and AI Are Reshaping Our Reality, is a deep dive into the societal impact of digital media, AI, and social networks, examining how they influence everything from our daily lives to global policy.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled Digitally Hijacked: The Age of Influence: How Social Media and AI Are Reshaping Our Reality. It was inspired by my growing concern about the pervasive influence of digital media and AI on society. Over the years, I have observed how social media platforms, algorithms, and artificial intelligence systems shape our perceptions, behaviors, and even political landscapes. I wanted to explore how these technologies, while powerful, also have the potential to hijack our autonomy, our culture, and our communication. The book aims to provide readers with a critical analysis and better understanding of the forces driving our digital age.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t say my habits are particularly unusual, but I do like to immerse myself deeply in the subject matter before I write. I spend a lot of time reading related books and research articles, watching documentaries, and listening to podcasts to fully absorb the topic. Once I feel well-versed, I often write in bursts—sometimes late at night or in the early morning, when I find the world is quieter, and my thoughts can flow more freely. I also have a habit of walking while thinking through ideas, which helps me process complex concepts before putting them on paper.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Several authors have had a significant influence on my writing. Marshall McLuhan’s Understanding Media has been foundational in shaping my views on media theory and its societal impact. Another key influence is Sherry Turkle’s Alone Together, which explores how digital technology is reshaping human relationships. Additionally, Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death made me think critically about the role of entertainment and media in shaping public discourse. These works, among others, have deeply influenced my perspective on the intersection of technology, communication, and society.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on a research project that examines the role of AI in public policy and governance. I am also exploring ideas for a new book that will delve into the future of digital governance and the ethical implications of AI in decision-making processes. My aim is to shed light on how these technologies can be harnessed for the public good, while also addressing the potential risks and challenges they pose.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find that promoting my books on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads, combined with engaging with readers through social media and my own website, is a great way to connect with an audience. I also leverage my articles and blog posts to create visibility for my work.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
For new authors, my advice would be to remain persistent and patient. The writing and publishing journey can be slow, but consistency is key. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to your audience early—whether through social media or newsletters. Engaging with readers is one of the best ways to grow your presence.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever received is to “write what you believe in, not what you think others want to hear.” This advice has kept me grounded in my mission to write authentically and meaningfully, rather than following trends or trying to appease popular opinion.
What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m reading The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr. It’s a compelling exploration of how the internet is reshaping cognitive function and deep thinking, which ties perfectly into the themes I explore in my own work.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Looking ahead, I hope to continue writing about the intersection of technology, communication, and society. I’m also interested in developing more academic work that dives deeper into the implications of AI and social media on public administration and governance. Ultimately, I hope to contribute to shaping how we think about and manage the digital world.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
That’s a tough one! If I had to choose, I would take:
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare—for its endless layers of meaning and depth.
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari—because it’s both thought-provoking and expansive in its view of human history.
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius—its timeless wisdom is something I would want to reflect on while stranded.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams—for a good laugh and a dose of absurdity to balance out the other books!
