Interview With Author Murray Moffatt
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m retired after working as a Broadcast Journalist for twenty-five years followed by a second career as a Senior Public Relations Consultant. I have written eight books, the last seven have been novels. The first book was an autobiography, ‘A Different Kind of Life’, which my daughter arranged for me to do through StoryWorth. I wrote that book over the course of a year and then decided to keep on going and write some of the stories I had always wanted to do.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is ‘Murder Not Quite Buried’ and it’s the fifth in my Shane Daniels Mystery series. I’ve had some great feedback from readers about the unique plots and the main characters. Shane is a disabled former cop trying to deal with a father who is in prison for murder. His partner, Emma, counsels recent amputees, and then there’s Shane’s childhood friend, Ben Chen, a never politically correct, foul mouthed, ower of a Chinese restaurant. In ‘Murder Not Quite Buried’, Shane reviews the circumstances around the disappearance of a woman seven years ago before her husband receives a huge life insurance payment. But the discovery of a woman and a child’s body buried near Shane’s hometown sends him looking for a cold-blooded killer.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I write in bursts which usually last about an hour and then I have to walk away from the keyboard and do something else.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Like many writers, Stephen King, because of his unique stories and memorable dialogue, but I’ve always been in awe of the great American novelist James Lee Burke. Every time I read one of his books, I dream about being able to write descriptive prose half as good as him.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the outline for another Shane Daniels Mystery.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I spent a lot of time developing my website in order to promote my books and I have been surprised by the number of visits I receive from around the world.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write every day, even if it’s for ten minutes, because writing is hard work and you have to make it a daily habit or you’ll lose the desire to do it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I had the pleasure many years ago of interviewing the great Canadian author W.O. Mitchell (Who Has Seen The Wind) and when I asked him for advice he said, “Write every day”.
What are you reading now?
‘Traitors Dance’ by Jeff Abbot
