About My Way on the Camino Portuguese by John Seegers
What happens when the road demands more than your body can give—but your spirit refuses to quit?
In My Way on the Camino Portuguese, John Seegers shares the honest, humorous, and deeply personal story of his pilgrimage from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela. Battling knee pain, fatigue, and self-doubt, Seegers doesn’t just walk the Camino—he wrestles with it, adapts to it, and ultimately finds meaning in its every challenge and detour.
Told with warmth and wisdom, this memoir captures the unique rhythm of walking alone while surrounded by strangers who briefly become companions, guides, and even angels. Along the way, Seegers reflects on aging, resilience, and the evolving meaning of pilgrimage in a modern world.
Whether you’re planning your own Camino, reflecting on past journeys, or simply drawn to stories of courage and transformation, My Way on the Camino Portuguese is a powerful reminder that the path we walk is as individual as the footsteps we leave behind.

Author Bio:
Born in New Jersey, John Seegers moved to Orlando, Florida, at age 20, driven by an adventurous spirit to start a new life. He found his calling in the hospitality industry, serving central Florida’s visitors for over 40 years. He began by working briefly at Walt Disney World and then moved on to various positions in hotel sales and catering management. After decades in the industry, he embarked on a new adventure: retirement.
A few years into retirement, John sought a new challenge and discovered the Camino de Santiago through a neighbor. The idea of undertaking a pilgrimage walk intrigued him. In 2021, at age 67, he walked 500 miles on the Camino Frances, starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France. He climbed and descended the Pyrenees, then crossed northern Spain to reach the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and the relics of Saint James, the Greater, one of Jesus Christ’s Apostles. Upon his return, John wrote his memoir, Another Camino Story. In 2023, John walked the Camino Frances a second time, and in 2024, he completed the Camino Portuguese coastal route, starting in Lisbon, Portugal.
John’s book about his journey on the Camino Portuguese, *Finding My Way on the Camino Portuguese: A Pilgrimage Walk from Lisbon, Portugal, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain*, was published in July 2025.
