Interview With Author Nataša Benedičič
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My love for poetry was kindled in primary school, where I first started writing down poems. Although I come from a small country of Slovenia, I’ve always used the English language as an easier way to express myself. My poems are versatile in style and nature, although I mostly use free verse. They touch the topics of emotions that life evokes, lately mostly exploring the significance of healing and nurturing the inner child. I have self-published three poetry collections (Colours of the Sea; Endless Space Between and Wanderers). My work has been published in international magazines and anthologies. Recently I published a self-help book for creative souls, who wish to heal and nurture the inner child through poetry or drawings.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title is Whispers of the Inner Child. My own journey of healing the inner child has inspired a short story – a conversation between three characters and what has helped them along the path. But the main part of the book is about nurturing that creative spark of the youthful spirit, rediscovering how you used to view the world, to reconnecting with that child and what he/she has to say. I believe that what you loved as a child is your key to joy, and as adults, we often forget the joy and wonder we felt as kids. I think it’s time to heal the wounds that inner child might have, to give yourself freedom and enjoy the little moments today, as a child in you would have.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
As my days are busy with taking care of my three children, I just try to write down any idea, any line, that comes up. Most of my writing is done in the late hours of the evening while listening to music.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Many have, like Edgar A. Poe, Sylvia Plath, Virginia Wolf, Thomas Hardy, Tolkien, Neil Gaiman, and Terry Pratchett. To name just one – I keep returning to Walt Whitman and the book Leaves of Grass.
What are you working on now?
Writing short stories for children and a fantasy novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve found the Instagram poetry community to be the most helpful with feedback and promoting my books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up, keep reading and writing, and don’t care so much about how your work will be perceived. Find your voice and write the story you need to write.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” — E.E. Cummings
“Just don’t give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don’t think you can go wrong.” — Ella Fitzgerald
What are you reading now?
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries – Emily Wilde Series by Heather Fawcett; and The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I just want to create and hopefully, someone out there will get to read my stories.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Lord of the Rings, Leaves of Grass, Little Prince, and The Alchemist.
