About VICTORY OUTSIDE THE ARENA by Bill Burke
Former athletes all know what it’s like to face the end of their time inside the arena. They can recall in vivid detail the last time they took the uniform off and more importantly, the feelings that came with that. They can also recall the feeling of uncertainty that came with trying to navigate the months and years after their career ended. Without the daily competition, routine and camaraderie, life looked a lot different. Some athletes handle the transition smoothly, while many others struggle mightily to figure out who they are without their identity as an athlete. Then, if and when they do get their feet under them, they wonder if they are truly reaching their full potential in life. Through my own experiences and the conversations I’ve had over the years, this is a problem that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough. And while there is more awareness now, countless athletes continue to suffer in silence.
