About A Far Away House
“It all started in a faraway house…”
So begins the story of Ava, who lived in Chicago as a little girl—until disaster drove her family out of the city to seek peace in dusty Airwood, Kentucky. Growing up homeschooled, Ava took solace in her storybooks, always feeling separate from her brothers, who lived in their own little worlds, and her parents, who stumbled through life. Suddenly, she found herself standing in the garden of the Fig sisters—three ladies who saw the beauty in her and the young woman she would soon become.
Meet Ava, whose lush imagination helped her survive coming of age in Airwood.
Her family consisted of a truck driver, a secretive mother, a juvenile delinquent in the making, and a sick boy who desperately needed to be healed. Life in Airwood was never dull for Ava, as she made memories with the the bohemian Figs, a psychiatrist’s troubled daughter, and a preacher who lived in the junkyard. The longer she lived in Airwood, the more confusing life seemed, and adolescence came crashing down on her before she realized it. Finally, she got her ticket to escape into the world of writing competitions in a city far away…but her escape was nothing like she’d expected, and it drove her straight back into the stark realities of Airwood. Would she learn to call this town her home after all?
