About DON’T Feed the ANTS!: Help Your Child Learn to Deal With Negative Thoughts and Feelings
Don’t Feed The Ants is a children’s book, ages 5 to 10, to help children identify, stop, and change automatic negative thoughts by using a process called “thought-stopping”. This book depicts a little boy who feels sad, has negative thoughts about himself, and may have depression. He does not want to join his friends in soccer. An analogy of ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and the insects “ANTs” is used in describing how ANTs multiply if we “feed” them. The little boy’s mother talks with her son about his sadness and how to change the negative thoughts to positive thoughts, instead of “feeding” the ANTs, causing them to multiply. Instead, she teaches him how to catch, stop, and change the automatic negative thoughts to positive thoughts, so he can control the negative thoughts and/or depressive thoughts, and feel happy again. It is important that we teach our children these coping mechanisms early in life, so they can learn to identify and manage their emotions, thereby increasing their resilience in life. If children allow these automatic negative thoughts to control them, they may end up being negative and depressed adults. Any techniques we can teach our children will only benefit them as they grow into teens and then adults.

Super Farty Pants by Paul Wennersberg-Løvholen is a story about Amelia who, while playing one day, encounters a strange-looking bug who turns out to be a sassy Fairy Godmother that can only grant very specific wishes. Amelia wishes to be a superhero and, with a swish of her tiny wand, the Fairy Godmother bug disappears and Amelia is left unchanged, or so she thinks. After a series of misadventure experiments, she discovers she is not invisible or super-fast but, with the help of a healthy dose of vegetables, she can use her super farts to propel herself through the air. She decides to go by the superhero name ‘Super Farty Pants’ and goes off to fight crime. Amelia then uses her super farts to stop a robbery before revealing her new super persona to the media and flying away home. After all is said and done, Amelia fully embraces her new identity and makes sure to load up on vegetables at dinner each night.
This story is a quirky tale with whimsical characters and off-beat moments of subtle humor. It flows as most superhero origin stories do, and the illustrations have a retro quality that supports the general feel of the story well. Paul Wennersberg-Løvholen writes fart humor without being profane or gross and I didn’t find it to be too over the top. Instead, the Super Farty Pants story had just the right amount of absurd, immature fun. I would imagine that ambitious children might embrace eating their broccoli after reading this story, even if it is only to bolster their flatulence. Amelia will fart her way through the air and into your heart.

The title of this story, “down the rabbit hole,” is of course from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), a wonderful children’s story by Lewis Carroll in which a charming young girl named Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a strange, dreamlike world. “It was much pleasanter at home,” thought Alice, “when one wasn’t always being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn’t gone down the rabbit hole, and yet, and yet…”
“Down the rabbit hole” has become a term used for referring to a situation that is strange, confusing, or illogical, often mystical or magical, and, in this story, an encounter from which one will emerge with increased knowledge, widened horizons, enriched imagination, and a sense of greatly enlarged possibilities.
In Carroll’s sequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass (1871), near the end of her encounter with the White Queen, Alice protests that “one can’t believe impossible things.” The White Queen famously retorts, “I daresay you haven’t had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
Unlike the White Queen, I do not advocate believing impossible things. But it is much to be hoped that this short story and the anthology that follows it will encourage the reader to consider all the possibilities and therefore believe at least one magical thing—perhaps even “before breakfast.”
This charming fantasy will have you and your children engaged and laughing. Even better, it will leave them with the message that they have within them all the spirit and magic they’ll ever need. Mystical, whimsical, and richly entertaining from the opening scene to the unexpected conclusion, this inspirational short story will transport you to a wonderful place and resound in your heart long after the last works have been read.
