Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Black As Kink is my debut novel. I have been writing for over 20 years, keeping everything I’ve written secret and to myself. After sharing a short story with a writer friend, she encouraged me to write explore the story more, with Black As Kink the end result.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Black As Kink is a play on words of the phrase Black As Ink. With the story set around a publishing business and being an erotic novel with kink undertones – the title just seemed to work. What I then needed to do was to weave the title into the story some how (no spoilers here, you’ll have to read it to see what I did!)
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if this is unusual, but I will be writing away and if I hit a passage of the book I am not in the right mood to get down on paper, I’ll skip it and continue further on, going back to the missing section later. This is very relevant when writing an erotic scene. Just like people need to be in the right mood to make the sparks fly in bed – so I need to be in the right mood to ensure I give my readers sparks on the page.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Matthew Reilly has been the most influential in terms of my writing process, having attended several of his presentations. Although a writer of science-fiction and action, it is his passion and persistence which I found inspiring. But another huge influence is the writer Jilly Cooper. I have always adored her books but I was always left wanting just a little more from her hotter scenes, which I guess is why I write the way I do.
What are you working on now?
Kill For Kink is the next installment in the Black As Kink series and is currently being written. I am also completing a series of episodic novellas following the adventures of a female spy called Jack Horner. The first episode is ready for my editor and two and three are all planned out and will probably be written as I write Kill for Kink.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It is too soon to say, but as soon as I know I’d be happy to write you a blog post!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
One word persistence. Just keep at it and complete something. It took me 20 years to learn this.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
As an indie author, I think the best advice I was given was to produce a book which looked as professional as a product from a traditional publishing house.
What are you reading now?
I am re-reading Matthew Reilly’s Scarecrow purely for pace inspiration for some of the action scenes in my Jack Horner novellas.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Write and publish more. With the encouragement of several people who want to know what happens next to my Black As Kink protagonist Dallas Sears, I feel I have a duty to write the next installment. Apart from that, I’ve got the publishing bug now!!!!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
There are too many to chose from. It’s like asking which of your children you like best.
