Interview With Author Oliver Trusler
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a writer from England who lives with his wife and assorted pets!
I have five novels, a book of poetry, one novella, and a children’s book, which are currently available on Amazon.
All my novels so far have been set in a shared universe entitled “The Truslerverse”.
This world is one where superpowers exist, along with all the weird and wonderful supernatural entities my characters encounter.
With “I Must Get Back To The Woods”, the Truslerverse begins with a comedy tale featuring useless superpowers, an alien invasion and a six-legged cat, among other things!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest published book is “The Man Who Put On A Dress And Could See Through Walls”.
I had the idea that it would be interesting if someone could only access their superpower by wearing a specific outfit. In this case, a woman’s dress.
Throw in some LSD addiction and a rudely rich handsome protaganist and I had the makings of a very silly novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to just write as I go.
Ideas come to me in the usual places, in the shower, walking the dogs, etc.
But there is no actual planning involved. I sit down at my computer and just type what comes into my head.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Big fan of Jason Pargin’s work. His “John Dies At The End” series has been a huge influence on me.
Chuck Palahniuk is another author I admire. I’d love to write like him, but he has such a unique style I think it would be next to impossible.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the sixth book in the Truslerverse series.
Entitled “Look Mum, No Head”, this one brings all the characters from each of the previous novels together for one final showdown with the bad guys.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Engaging with readers is always a good way to promote your work.
I make silly TikTok videos and post to Facebook and YouTube as well.
I’ve done promotions in the past on CraveBooks and Amazon.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what you love.
Simple as that. Writing to market is all well and good but if you don’t like the market, you are not going to put out an engaging story.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Someone somewhere will love your work, just like someone else will hate it.
What are you reading now?
Re-reading “Diary” by Chuck Palahniuk. It’s been so long since I first read it I can’t remember what happens!
Also reading my way through every Avengers comic from the start. Yeah, I’m a comic book nerd!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once the Trusleverse is done and dusted, I’m not sure.
I’d like to write a proper horror novel.
I’d also be keen on trying my hand at a screenplay.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
“Generation X” By Douglas Coupland. Just because it’s so good!
“House Of Leaves” By Mark Z. Danielewski. Because it’s one of those books you can unpack in so many ways.
“The Stand” By Stephen King. I mean, come on, it’s huge and a good read!
