Interview With Author Paul Karvanis
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve stopped and started a number, but only one book has made it across the finish line and been published!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“The Happy Lawyer” was inspired by my own journey as an unhappy lawyer. I was unhappy and I knew too many other unhappy lawyers like me. But I also knew a few happy ones – so I was sure that it was possible.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
It turns out that lawyers are trained to write for clarity and precision, not for the reader experience. To make my book as conversational as possible (and to try to counteract my 12+ years of being a lawyer), I spoke and transcribed the first draft of my book.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Deep Work by Cal Newport, Atomic Habits by James Clear, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield, and How Will You Measure Your Life by Clayton Christensen probably all belong in the “top 5 most influential books” for me.
What are you working on now?
I’ve already got ideas percolating for The Creative Lawyer and The Spiritual Lawyer. But I haven’t started either yet.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just start. Start writing. You’re writing as much for you as you are for whoever will read it, so don’t worry about it yet.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
See above.
What are you reading now?
Becoming Supernatural by Joe Dispenza. I can’t figure out if it’s all BS or if this is the cheat code I’ve been waiting for my entire life.
What’s next for you as a writer?
First, I want to try to launch The Happy Lawyer as well as I can. Then I’ll focus on welcoming the newest little baby to our family. And after that, I feel like taking a bunch of lawyers through The Artist’s Way and then writing about it would make for an interesting read.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Assuming I didn’t need to spend any of the slots on something practical to help with my survival, I’d probably bring: The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer, Conscious Living by Gay Hendricks, and Loving What Is by Byron Katie.
I feel like I could spend that time meditating and stepping up to the next level of consciousness. 🤷
