Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I like writing, animals, potato chips, and cheese. Midnight Riders is my first published novel, although I finally finished Helix Crashing, the fantasy novel I worked on for over a decade. In addition, I wrote Across the Barren Landscape, a collection of linked Western short stories. I also write plays, both dramatic and comedic. When not writing, I obsess over Boston sports.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Midnight Riders is an alternate history of the American Revolution. I was inspired by a conversation I was having with my father in law about how many of the significant heroes of the period are not all that well known. I like American history, comedy, and supernatural creatures so I decided to mix all three.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. After I finish, I listen to bad 80’s music. That’s unusual I guess.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ray Bradbury is the primary influence. David Wong and Douglas Adams seem to have the same sense of humor as I do.
What are you working on now?
I am mostly writing short stories, as well as a novella about Shakespeare and zombies.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t have one. Nothing works.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
No. Everyone is different.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Avoid passive voice.
What are you reading now?
I am rereading a lot since I teach. Mostly early British and American stuff.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to get some other things ready for publication.
What is your favorite book of all time?
It is a twelve way tie. Some are Dandelion Wine, Catch 22, Neverwhere, Hamlet, Watership Down, and Less than Zero.
