Interview With Author Pieter Whittington
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Well, where do I start? I was in the army, traveled the world, and managed to write seven books along the way, not to mention ten screenplays. Why stop at just one form of storytelling, right? Oh, and I’ve got three incredible daughters who keep me on my toes. Let’s say there’s never a dull moment between wrangling life, ideas, and adventures!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called *Light: The Gates of Hades and the Fall of Darkness.* The inspiration for it came from when I was a kid and read the Bible’s Revelations. It scared the living daylights out of me, but it also left me with this deep curiosity. Fast forward a bit, I had this crazy fever-induced vision—saw an earth floating over a castle, and that image just stuck with me. After 25 years of gathering pieces, figuring out the story, and more drafts than I care to admit, I finally have a final draft in my hands. It’s been a wild ride!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My writing habits? Let’s just say they’re as unpredictable as a plot twist. I usually write at night or when I’m multitasking. But here’s the kicker: I need to be seriously inspired and excited to get the words flowing. Sometimes, I don’t write for months—total creative drought—but when it hits, it’s like a tsunami of ideas, and I’m writing like a man possessed. It’s a bit chaotic, but hey, it works!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King and the Bible are my go-to influences. King’s books are like a masterclass in crafting suspense, horror, and deep character development. And the Bible? Well, it’s a treasure trove of profound stories, symbolism, and intense imagery that really shaped how I think about storytelling. So, between those two, my brain’s always juggling the sacred and the scary!
What are you working on now?
Right now, I’m working on a new book called *Flatworld*—though that’s just a working title for now. It’s about this scientist who creates a whole new world out in space, where he places children to grow up on their own. No parents, no knowledge of Earth, just a clean slate. The twist? He leaves and returns 30 years later only to find that the world he created isn’t exactly the paradise he imagined. Things get…complicated.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
When it comes to promoting my books, I’m all about budgeting and going all-in with whatever I can afford. I blast it hard during the first three days—like a fireworks show—and then I hit it once a week for the next three months. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, but you’ve got to keep that momentum going!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors? Never give up. Writing is like a marriage—sometimes you’ll love it, sometimes you’ll hate it, but it’s always there, inside you, no matter what. And trust me, that story will stick around. Also, edit, edit, edit—it’s your best friend. Keep writing until you don’t have to think about it anymore, and the words just start to flow. That’s when the magic happens!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard? Simple: “Work hard, and make a little room for God.” It’s a reminder to give it your all but also to leave space for something bigger than yourself to step in. That balance has carried me far.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island and could only bring a few books, I’d pack *The Bible*, Stephen King’s *The Stand*, and *The Autobiography of Malcolm X*. Between the spiritual, the epic, and the deeply inspiring, I think I’d be pretty well-covered for some serious island reflection!
