Interview With Author R. W. Culpepper
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Talking about myself is one of the hardest things for me to do. However, I'll give it my best shot. I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and I was an only child for the longest time, so I had to entertain myself with my army men and other toys. Thank God my imagination was off the charts. I would be in my room for hours playing by myself.
Nevertheless, creating stories has been my passion since I was five years old; someone had to create the stories for the adventures of my toys. now, at fifty-three, the ideas in my head are still going. As of right now, I do believe I have eleven books published.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I recently started a new series that features a little turtle named Timber. The first book is called "I'm Grounded!" My mother inspired this series. She was a schoolteacher for twenty-five years. The stories my mother continues to tell me about the kids she taught blow my mind. Children are so funny.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love to write several books at the same time. I feel it helps with writer's block.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Goosebumps by R. L. Stein, Dr. Seuss's books as a little kid, Stephen King, and the Harry Potter series.
What are you working on now?
I'm currently working on my Timber the Turtle series. I have many books in this series created already. I make my illustrations. However, images are time-consuming.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I believe it would be Amazon. I haven't gotten the marketing down yet. I'm hoping to get it right this time around.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I advise new authors to keep writing to hone their skills. A good piece of software like Grammarly comes in handy too. Also, build an online presence and email list. I'm working on that right now. I should have had this years ago.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write shorter stories and build an online presence and email list.
What are you reading now?
Currently, I'm not reading anything but my stories.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will continue to write more Timber the Turtle books and a few bedtime stories.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
A mixture of the Goosebumps serial and the Harry Potter series.
