Interview With Author R. W. Hert
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This question always makes me freeze. Tell me I'm not the only one. Just an open ended "tell me about yourself" and static rushes through my brain and I end up staring stupidly at whoever asked it.
Now ask me what I love to read and I can go on for hours.
Why don't we start with that? I LOVE Fantasy. Especially dragons! Give me a dragon book and I will happily disappear into it. I used to dream about having a dragon. Unfortunately, the closest I've been able to get is to write them into my books, and make those books as alive as possible.
I think books should transport you. I mean who doesn't want to go flying through the clouds, or swimming with the mermaids and get so involved with the words that you actually feel like you're there. When I think of good books, that's what it does for me, and that's what I try to make happen with the books I write.
Action! Action is a must. In books and in life, I want something to be happening which is probably why I daylight as a mom of 8 kids (4 of which were adopted through foster care, and let me tell you, if you're looking for a crazy rollercoaster that is definitely one.)
I also like to get to know people. I want to understand them, and see where they're coming from. Connection is key.
As for how many books I've written it's not so easy. I have written over 25 novels, most of which will never see the light of day. I have 4 published or coming soon, and a novella also coming out soon.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Demon King which is the fourth book in the Daemarkin series. I first got the inspiration for writing this series while watching Naruto with my husband. I found Gara fascinating and started forming this idea for a human boy who had a demon trapped inside him. At first I just put him up on a snowy mountain all alone in my brain, but over time he became the lone protector of a village that didn't even like him. The series evolved from there, taking Zade on many adventures.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I'm writing my family is always asking what is wrong, or why I'm making that face because I mimic the expression of my characters as I'm writing it. My kids think it's hilarious.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite book as a kid was Dragon's Milk by Susan Fletcher. I read that book so many times the spine started breaking. One of those times I remember one part being so vivid and real that I couldn't wait to read it again. The next time through I was reading and getting very excited that this part was coming up, and then it wasn't there. That entire section didn't even exist. It took me some time to come to terms with the fact that I must have dreamed it.
It was at that point that I decided if I could dream something so amazing up in relation to someone else's story, I should start writing my own.
What are you working on now?
Currently I'm working on the 5th and final book of the Daemarkin series, the novella, and getting the 4th book through the editing process so it can head to publication.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I finish my Daemarkin series I'm going to work on a new series where two people who hate each other are matched together for life by an oracle. It should be fun.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Several blank reams of paper so I can write my own.
2. A survival guide
3. A dragon boxset book
