Interview With Author Ramya Julian
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I've written several picture books and two full length novels, which are both Jane Austen retellings. Several other novels are works in progress.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Malathi.
I was inspired to write this book about a woman in 1960s India who agrees to an arranged marriage in exchange for an education. Casteism plays its role in the story, along with a lot of (awry) family dynamics, and of course, romance. I was inspired to write this story because of late, I've been reading several books written by people of the suppressed caste detailing the injustices they faced.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I listen to Tamil songs, drink green tea, slip on my warm fluffy dressing gown and then I'm off on the laptop!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Jane Austen, L M Alcott, L M Montgomery, Enid Blyton, Richmal Crompton and many many more
What are you working on now?
I'm working on Malathi and editing an older book, Aradhana, which is a retelling of Persuasion set during the Partition of India.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I'm still new to this so I'll be able to answer that question in a year!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I consider myself a new author, but my advice to anyone, fellow author or not, is don't give up!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don't wait for inspiration. Just write. It's okay if it's nonsense.
What are you reading now?
The Happiness factor by Kirk Douglas,
What Alice forgot by Liane Moriarty, The devil's daughter by Lisa Kleypas, Through the Looking Glass – a study of language
What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm going to keep at it and meanwhile, I'll hopefully get better at marketing
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Pride and Prejudice, Anne of Green gable, little women
