Interview With Author Rebecca Bolton
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a twin mum, history grad based in rural England. I write about everything and anything that flows out of my brain! Poetry, history, nostalgia, lifestyle.
My first two publications have been poetry collections that have been incredibly meaningful to me.
Connections: Poems for Healing included words to aid those that might be struggling to find their inner strength. Whether they have feel they have lost some of themselves through loss, mental health or any type of grief, Connections aims to help guide the reader back.
We Are the Fall is a collection of mythical retellings in verse. It is focused on 22 mythical women, sourced from Celtic, Greek, Norse and more. The poems retell the myths in a way that returns the voice, agency and power to the women in the myths. A must-read for any who love a dose of feminism with their literature.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
We Are the Fall is was inspired by a conversation I had with a friend, regarding the similarities between Pandora and Eve. The women blamed for the fall of the world, the birth of destruction. We thought of all the mythical women who were victims— blamed, assaulted, cursed. What is their stories were flipped to give them back their voice and agency? It all evolved from there.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure I have any. I think all the things I do are pretty common. Getting ideas in random places and scrambling to write them down, writing thousands of words in a day and then not being able to write for weeks, getting so excited by my own plot twist that I let out a little squeal when I read it back (that one might just be me….).
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Delphine Woods style of twists and turns in her Victorian Gothic novels have really inspired my process when writing my own plot twists. I never see Woods’ twists coming and that’s quite unusual me!
Donna Ashworth inspires my spiritual side for poetry writing. Donna’s words are such a gift to us all and I highly recommend any poetry or affirmation lover to check out her books.
What are you working on now?
My current work in progress is completely different from my poetry collections. I have been working on an older YA fantasy novel for the past couple of years. It is full of genetic powers, secrets, betrayal, action and a sprinkle of LGBT romance.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
BlueSky has been my favourite place for talking about my writing in general. It has such a great, supportive book community and people are always willing to share you work or help you out.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be realistic with your goals and explore options other than traditional publishing, as it isn’t always what you might expect. Since I started writing and joining more communities with other authors, I have learnt so much about the processes and turns out—a lot of things I thought were wrong.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write it anyway, let it live. There’s so many ways that you can self-publish for free now, that it would be a shame to not do it. Who knows where it could lead?
What are you reading now?
The Vipers by Katy Hays. I loved The Cloisters, so I’m excited to see what this one brings!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing that YA novel!
I also write multiple posts a week for my personal website, so will continue to do that to build my community and audience there.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Selling Hitler – Robert Harris
The Asylum – Karen Coles
Cloud Atlas and Bone Clocks – David Mitchell
