Interview With Author Rhett Smith
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Rhett Smith. I’m 37, and I live in Lincoln with my fiancé. When I’m not writing, I love to listen to music and travel; I enjoy going to America. I’m the author of two novels. They are books that mix humor with hard-hitting subjects.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My new book is called Closing Time, and it’s inspired by my 18-year-old self. When I was 18, I thought I had life sussed; I was going to get a job and do all these things, but when I turned 18, I soon realised how hard it was. So, I decided to write a story about three 18-year-olds who are convinced life is going to turn out exactly how they want it to. But as we know, life can change in a heartbeat, and no matter what decisions you make, bad things are always going to happen.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The only habit I have that may not be unusual is when I’m out and about and I notice people; I sometimes create a character for them and add them to my story as a background character.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Starter for ten by David Nicholls
And Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle zevin.
What are you working on now?
I’m not currently working on anything.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Bookbub ads and Reddit.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
There are some books out there that have sold thousands that won’t even be as good or as strong as yours, so don’t give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Create a character, give them a problem, and keep throwing in little obstacles. People love to read about character misfortunes.
What are you reading now?
Deep cuts by Holly Brickley
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’d like to tackle a thriller.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
One day by David Nicholls
Atonement by Ian McEwan
Mayflies by Andrew O’Hagan
Norwegian wood by Haruki Murakami
