Interview With Author Rhowela Friel
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a pharmacist, writer, and mom of two little girls. I’ve worked in healthcare for over 15 years, but it wasn’t until I became a mom that I started writing books to help others feel more supported and less overwhelmed. So far, I’ve written 10 titles—including 2 children’s books, 2 full-length nonfiction books (The Complete Pregnancy Book for First-Time Moms and Your Pharmacist Guide To Saving Money and Staying Healthy), and a growing collection of practical mini-guides for moms and caregivers. My goal is to make things simpler, clearer, and more human. I write from both lived experience and clinical knowledge, and always with heart.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Complete Pregnancy Book for First-Time Moms: From Getting Pregnant to Postpartum Recovery. I wrote it because I couldn’t find a book that felt honest, clear, and grounded during my own pregnancy. After navigating infertility, pregnancy loss, and two C-sections, I knew how overwhelming the journey could feel—especially when you’re expected to figure it all out while exhausted and emotional. This book brings together the facts, the support, and the real-life encouragement I wish I had back then.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in between work, motherhood, and all the daily chaos—usually in bursts and with a cold cup of coffee. Some of my best ideas come during the most inconvenient moments (like driving or standing in line), so I use the Notes app and voice recordings constantly. I tend to write like I’m texting a mom-friend.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I was pregnant, I bought the usual books (What to Expect When You’re Expecting was my first) and used the What To Expect app too. I followed updates religiously, but I also found myself craving something more real—something grounded and relatable. Honestly, I’ve been most influenced by everyday moms who share their stories online. Blogs, support groups, late-night posts in mom forums—that’s where I found the real talk and reassurance I needed. I also admire authors like Emily Oster for breaking down data clearly—but it’s the real-life experiences from other moms that shaped the way I write more than anything else.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on the next book in The Mama Series—a baby care guide that covers the first year with clarity and calm. I’m also building out mini-guides and checklists, expanding my website content, and starting a blog to support more moms in practical, relatable ways.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far, my best method has been a mix of Amazon KDP, free resource opt-ins (like my New Mom Starter Kit), and building relationships through my author website. I also use Instagram and Facebook to connect with moms directly.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start where you are. Don’t wait until it feels perfect—just write what you know, what you’ve lived, and what you’d tell a friend. People don’t need polished; they need real.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Always come from a place of helping. Write like you’re talking to someone who already trusts you. Be honest. Be useful. That’s what sticks.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. It’s full of simple, real-life strategies that actually make sense—especially now that my girls are getting older and we’re navigating big feelings and bigger personalities.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m growing The Mama Series with more books that support moms during baby and toddlerhood.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d bring a well-worn copy of a children’s book my daughters love—so I’d have a little piece of them with me. I’d also want something actually useful, like How to Stay Alive by Bear Grylls or another survival guide that could teach me how to build a shelter or catch food. And maybe a blank journal—just to write, reflect, and stay grounded.
