Interview With Author Richard Kenway
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Richard and I live in Scotland with family.
I have wanted to be a writer for so long now I honestly cant think of a time when I wanted to be anything else. Even When I was a young child growing up I used to love books. I guess there was a moment when I thought to myself that I would like to create my own worlds full of interesting places and characters.
I have written five books so far that I self-published on Amazon. They are as follows.
The Spirits of Vine house.
Clones.
The Bounty Hunter.
Happy Place.
Blizzard.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The last book I wrote hasn’t been released yet. Its called Fawley Island and is about a man who must travel to an abandoned Island to look for his lost brother.
Growing up I loved playing survival horror games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Dino Crisis. There’s something captivating about being trapped in a horrible and terrifying situation with limited resources and trying against all odds to survive. I’ve tried to capture some of that in this story, which will hopefully be released at some point this year.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Unusual writing habits? I don’t think I have any. Not unusual ones anyway. When I sit down to write I usually find a nice quiet chair to sit in, I might put on some music, the cat usually snuggles up beside me, and then I just type away on my computer. I try to get at least ten pages done a day. Most of the time I achieve this.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been a huge fan of Stephen King ever since I first picked up one of his novels. James Herbert has also been rather influential to me.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on a story about an evil child. As you can probably imagine, I got the inspiration from stories like Pet Cemetery and Children of the Corn, as well as movies like The Omen. I think its scary when you take away something like a child’s innocence and twist it into something evil. Then it becomes something truly terrifying.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Right now I’m relying on social media and word of mouth to help promote my books. But I’m starting to branch out and discover new ways to get my books in front of readers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Its simple but its a classic. Don’t give up.
There are many people out there who say they want to write a book and then never make it past the first fifty pages. I myself am dyslexic and have been faced with some challenges when it comes to writing. But if you feel deep down that you were put on this planet to write and create stories then you gotta get writing. And you gotta get your stories out there for people to discover.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I heard was something that Stephen King said once. If I remember the story correctly, When he used to submit stories to magazines they would send him a rejection letter and he would tac these to his wall. One day he had some many rejection letters the tac fell out the wall. So he got a bigger nail. And that story stuck with me. So every time I feel like I’m not getting anywhere or I feel like I’m failing I just tell myself to get a bigger nail.
What are you reading now?
I am currently halfway through book seven of the Tomorrow series by John Marsden. The moment I started reading book one I was hooked. It is a fantastic and well written story that takes you on a rollercoaster ride as Ellie and her friends fight to save their family, friends and their country from an invading force. It is a book series that I cannot recommend enough.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now I’m proof reading and editing two projects which I hope to release at some point in the next year. After that I can concentrate on my next project.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh well its definitely got to be something by Stephen King. But I’d also like to have a book by an author that I’m not familiar with. Although I think it would be ironic to read a story like Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe whilst actually being stranded on a desert island.
