Interview With Author Richard Thorne
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an IT Manager and Consultant from South Wales in UK. So far, I’ve written and published just one book, but I’ve tried to start with a pretty comprehensive one. The process was hard work, but very enjoyable, and I’m pretty happy with the finished product.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Management & Leadership”. I wanted to write a book aimed at helping managers and leaders to up their game. My career has involved a lot of management, and with more than 35 years of experience, I’ve been on many management courses (some great, some terrible), and I’ve seen many good and bad managers. The lack of consistency troubled me, and when my young son starts work, I’d like him to benefit from having a good manager. This motivated me to create something of a handbook for new and old managers & leaders.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Whatever they may be, they probably aren’t unusual to me. Feel free to point them out if I do.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
For this, none really. I’ve enjoyed the work of some great authors however. They’ve probably all contributed in someway to my fun and well-rounded personality <grin>.
What are you working on now?
I’m thinking of starting on another book now. My next will probably be aimed at helping businesses to get to grips with technology. No firm outline just yet though.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m too new at this to know yet.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just go for it. Seeing your own work in print is even more satisfying than you might expect. It’s not as difficult as you might think, and there’s a lot of useful help and advice out there.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I’ve heard so much good advice over the years it’s hard to pick. From a professional point of view, a wise person once told me that with each employee, you get a free brain. Be sure to make good use of it.
What are you reading now?
It’s a fairly technical IT book. I won’t bore you with the details.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully, I’ll get around to writing another book before too long. I’m thinking that the next one will be some non-technical guidance and advice to help small to medium businesses to take advantage of technology.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
There’d be a few from the late great Douglas Adams, and possibly a survival manual.
