Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a retired teacher, coach, and administrator with 35 years experience in both public and private schools. I have been married to my wife Patti for 30 years and we have two children, Scott and Caitlin.
I have recently published my first novel which I wrote during the 2016 NaNoWriMo event. Since that time, I have completed two other novels, which are still in the editing and revising stages, and a book of poetry that I hope to publish shortly.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The What If Project, my only published novel, is about a man who is obsessed with his past. He believes that everything that has ever gone wrong with his life can be traced back to the accidental death of his sister as a child. The two main characters, Jack and Dr. Melton, are inspired by the HBO show, The Sopranos, and the many scenes of Tony sitting across from his therapist. The time travel elements were inspired by one of my favorite old movies, Somewhere in Time.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I listen to classical music while I write (so as not to be distracted by lyrics) which I suppose is unusual since I never listen to it at any other time.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Stephen King and John Grisham, both of whom are excellent storytellers. Lately, I have been reading a lot of Cormac McCarthy and Lee Child, as well. For inspiration, Max Lucado.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on editing my second novel, Brothers, which is a modern retelling of the parable of the prodigal son. I am also putting the final touches on my book of poetry which I hope to publish soon.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I promote through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, but my blog is the best source of current information about my writing projects. http://rdperryauthor.blogspot.com
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up! It is easy to get discouraged and frustrated, but my best advice is to keep writing. Express yourself and tell your story!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Learn to make your inner editor shut up! Get that first draft out of your head and down on paper, THEN worry about editing and revising.
What are you reading now?
Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on getting novels two and three ready for publishing, as well as working on a possible sequel for novel three.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible, Orwell’s 1984, Tolstoy’s War and Peace, King’s Needful Things.
