Interview With Author Ricky Adams
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello, my name is Ricky Adams and a couple of days ago I published my first children’s novel Tumbleweed the Cowboy Flamingo. I began crafting stories for my son, searching for narratives that were gentle in nature and stimulated his imagination.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Tumbleweed the Cowboy Flamingo was inspired by a painting I made years ago and my love of western culture during the California Gold Rush. I wanted to share these stories with my son, but most of them were nigh conflict and violent, so I made a story that focused on making that time period more gentle and magical.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I typically start out by just writing whatever is in my head and then I end up having to revise it a million times.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Sieglinde De Francesca’s Limindoor Woods novels and Reg Down’s Tiptoes Lightly series.
What are you working on now?
Another children’s novel about Beach Gnomes. Many tales have been told about gnomes, about their tree trunk homes, crystal gardens, and mushroom umbrellas; however, all of those stories are about forest gnomes. Seldom has been told about beach gnomes. You may be thinking to yourself, I thought gnomes only lived in the forest; on the contrary, gnomes live all throughout nature, including beaches.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still very new to this so right now I am focused on promoting my books through my Instagram.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
See it through to the end. Don’t stop until you have your book in hand. It’s a very rewarding feeling.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Zoom out. Usually life’s problems don’t seem as bad when you widen the lens to a larger view.
What are you reading now?
Rasco and the Rats of NIMH by Jane Leslie Conly
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finishing my next upcoming children’s novel: Beach Gnomes.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Twig by Elizabeth Orton Jones, The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White, and Winnie The Pooh by A.A. Milne
