Interview With Author Riley Knight
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a classic starving artist who wanted to be a chef as a teenager, then a composer, and finally landed on author. I followed my husband across the country when he joined the army, landing in the middle of the desert. With nothing else to do, I adopted a couple of dogs and set to writing.
I’m a big nerd, who loves fantasy RPGs and re-watches Lord of the Rings every year. I quote it enough to make my husband want to throw my in the garbage.
I know have a cockatiel, still a baby whose become my obsession. She’s like a little toddler, equal parts adorable and tantrum throwing terrorist.
I’ve written two books to date, with several more getting ready to release in the next year.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Song in the Storm and its sequel, An Ember in the Wind were originally my first D&D campaign that I wrote for my husband to play solo. It became near and dear to our hearts, and was a no-brainer choice for my first novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I thoroughly plan books out, fully outlining the entire series and writing first drafts for them all before finishing book 1. I admire those who can pants their way through a series but its stresses me out, not knowing exactly where I’m headed.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
T. Kingfisher, Brandon Sanderson, Robin Hobb
What are you working on now?
I’m working on Death of the Glass Angel, a romantasy set in the same world as A Song in the Storm.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far social media has worked best! Gathering readers on TikTok and Instagram, specifically. Though, it took me some time to figure out what, exactly, to post.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I made so many mistakes on my journey. Start a social media early, gather interest and promote long before you hit publish.
Get your own ISBNs to publish across multiple platforms. Gather ARC readers through social media and sights like NetGalley or BookSirens.
Make sure you advertise your book honestly! Getting the right readers is more important than many who will hate your book.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write it badly.
Your story will suck in the beginning as you learn to write, just like any skill. What’s important it to get it on the paper, so you can begin that journey. Then, one day, you’ll be proud of how the words match the awesome story in your head.
What are you reading now?
Daughter of No Worlds and One Dark Window
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully starting book signings and author events! I’m an introvert with anxiety so its seems a large mountain to climb.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stormlight series
T. Kingfisher’s Paladin’s Grace series
