About Rock Bottom & Rising Tide by J.R. Allison
Rock Bottom and Rising Tide is an anthology of Maine-island-based short stories and novelettes. J. R. Allison writes about lobstermen and drunks, asexual misfits and dead conversationalists, coming-of-age confusion and middle-aged disintegration. You’ll find atheism worn as comfortably as bait-stained Grundens, queer characters who don’t apologize, and sexuality explored with the same unflinching honesty as a man nearly drowning for a bottle of rum.
Some stories will make you laugh—often uncomfortably. Others might piss you off. A few are tender, most are strange, and all of them refuse easy comfort.
If you’re looking for lighthouse romances and lobster-roll nostalgia, you’ve taken a wrong turn. But if you want to meet people as beautifully broken as the coast they inhabit, pull up a milk crate and stay awhile.
