Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m 75 years old and since I retired ten years ago I’ve written 25 books (mainly fiction, some on chess and others on social work-which was my career).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Wheel of Fortune and other stories. It’s a collection of short stories. Ideas are triggered off by all kinds of every day or odd incidents that have intrigued or interested me.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I write when I feel like it, usually daily. A cup of tea always helps!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anton Chekhov, Alice Munro, Samuel Beckett, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Franz Kafka, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Leacock, Alistair MacLeod.
What are you working on now?
More short stories! The latest is a murder mystery, a genre I’ve not explored before. I like there to be a ‘twist’ in what I write.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve no idea! I hope to find out. I put extracts on my Facebook page as I go along.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep at it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Believe in what you’re doing for only you can do it.
What are you reading now?
Thomas King ‘Cold Skies’
What’s next for you as a writer?
Don’t know- but it will be fun finding out!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. Any collection of Chekhov’s short stories
2. Any collection of Stephen Leacock’s stories.
3. A dictionary
