Interview With Author Ron Hare
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Boardroom Assassin is my first novel. I started writing it in 2002 and finally finished it 23 years later.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Boardroom Assassin. When I started the book, I wanted to do something that was not the normal whodunit book. I decided to take the perspective of a narcissistic CEO who, out of sheer boredom and a huge ego decided he could commit the perfect murder. I had originally titled it Catch Me If You Can, which just so happened to be a movie that came out in 2002 starring some pretty famous people. I kept that title as a placeholder. I was looking for a title that I could incorporate into a scene or storyline of the book somehow. I finally found that with Boardroom Assassin. You’ll just have to read the book to see how I tied the title into the story.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t call them unusual. My wife makes fun of me when she comes into the room, as she says I’m leaning back so far in my chair while I type that it’s like I’m lying down.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I am a big fan of Ken Follett. I prefer an easy read, where the characters are well-developed and easy to follow. I tried to do that in my writing, making two primary characters in Rick Frown and Elena Kolonik. I was also influenced in my early reading by Robert Ludlum and Tom Clancy, and later a bit by John Grisham. I was also a big fan of Jean Auel’s books, The Clan of the Cave Bear. It also had very compelling characters that I enjoyed following on their journey.
What are you working on now?
As I have just published my book for the first time, knowing very little about the process and not worrying about readers, I had zero marketing strategy. That turned out to be a mistake, so I’m frantically playing catch-up on that front. I wasn’t sure anyone would read my book, but now that I’ve received positive feedback from both people I know and some I do not, I’m trying to get it in front of people.
I’m also working on the sequel, Boardroom Assassin Executive Vengeance, which will follow Frown and Kolonik on the next step of the journey.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I haven’t found it yet, unfortunately. I’m using some Amazon ads and Facebook ads with limited results. I’m trying to build a Facebook following on my new author page and would love if you would click follow on me.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My biggest advice would be not to rush to publish. Try to get some ARC reviews before the book comes out. Build your social media presence before the book comes out. I think the first weeks and months after launch are most important, and you should be ready as soon as the book is released.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t get discouraged. I think that it’s a long journey to find a following. I’m hopeful that I’ll find mine. When the sequel is ready, I may take a different approach, which I hope will help to promote the first book also.
Be careful with book promotions, especially on Facebook. There is an unlimited supply of people who can make your book a bestseller. Most are scams. If you are planning to give someone money to promote your book, research them first.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading a James Patterson book called 6th Target. I wanted to look at something in my genre and compare it. I’m of course biased, but I think Boardroom Assassin is better than this book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on Boardroom Assassin Executive Vengeance, the sequel to Boardroom Assassin. I’m also contemplating a KDP Publishing book where I describe my journey and provide advice on someone who wants to go down the self-publishing road.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d take Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth Series, very long books and fun reads. I’d also bring Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel, I need to re-read that book.
