Interview With Author Ruth Madison
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started publishing in the late 1990s before ebooks even existed. But once Kindle came out, I was so happy to be able to take control of my career and self-publish my romance stories about people with disabilities.
Back then there wasn't such a push for representation so traditional publishers were not interested.
I love giving disabled characters a happily ever after!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My most recent novel is a romance called The World Between Us. It's about a secret rockstar and challenges in an interracial and interabled relationship. I was inspired many years ago listening to 90s music on the radio and I started wondering about a singer hiding their true identity. It took me quite a while to get a hold of how the structure of that story would work.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My favorite book of all time is Treasure Island. I have always been fascinated by the complexity of Long John Silver and his powerful charisma.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on writing my first romance series with interconnected characters centered around an adaptive sports team.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I love social media and my favs right now are Instagram and TikTok. I also use The Book Launch Planner to organize things like ARC campaigns, podcast interviews, etc.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
There's never been a better time to be an author. You can reach any audience in the world and your books have no shelf life. We have so much more control over our careers than we did when I started.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be yourself, everyone else is taken.
What are you reading now?
Right now I'm reading Break Me Out by Avery Kingston.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Getting myself on a schedule so I can publish more regularly and provide great entertainment for my audience!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
There are a few books that I read over and over. One is Plane Love by Avery Kingston, one is My Ex's Wedding by Annabelle Costa, and one is Lobster With A Straw by Lovis Johnson. I would definitely want those three with me!
