Interview With Author Sam Heller
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a retired teacher but, before that, I had been writing on and off for about twenty years, most notably as a professional copywriter for the UK and US governments. I had around twenty-five short stories published during the nineties, but novels were the real aim. Life got in the way, but now I have the time to pursue it properly. I have around 10 novels in different states of completion. Two are on sale on Amazon; two more will be out before the end of the year.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Roseweed. It’s book one of a horror trilogy in the James Herbert tradition. JH has always been my inspiration, and it’s been said that the first book in the trilogy is ‘The Rats with plantlife”. I’ll take that as a compliment.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Possibly. I write the first draft on my phone before transferring it to a computer for the second.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
James Herbert, H P Lovecraft, John Wyndham
What are you working on now?
Prepping books two and three of the trilogy for publication, writing the second and third books in my children’s ‘Mysterious World’ series, and writing a personal travel memoir.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have no head for business, so I just submit it everywhere I can.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going and don’t even bother thinking about publication until you have a finished piece that you’re 100% happy with. That’s the hard bit. Everything else is luck and perseverance.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t ignore the red flags.
What are you reading now?
James Herbert’s Ash series.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More of the same. I just want to write. Everything else is a bonus.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Any decent survival guide, one of my own to remind me that I can do it, and then The Rats, by James Herbert.
