Interview With Author Sam Libraty
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After completing a successful career in film and TV, I have focused full-time on my writing. Although my first book has just been published, I have written many short stories that I plan to include in an anthology. I love intelligent music, wonderful films, TV, and reading.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first book, “The Time Agents: Search for the Leon Key,” was published in 2022. I’m an avid reader of science fiction of all kinds. I hope this first book of the “Time Agents” book series continues the tradition of good science fiction and to inspire people to dream of and work to build a more inclusive society and positive future for all humankind.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
There are no specific techniques used in my writing. That’s not to say that I don’t have some ways to generate ideas and stories. Ironically, there’s no way I’ll know when inspiration will strike. But when it does, out comes my trusty note-taking app. That’s about it!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My most influential books include but are not limited to 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Stranger in a Strange Land, Forbidden Planet, and The Riverworld book series. Too many books have influenced me, but I hope this gives you an idea of where my imagination goes when writing.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on book two of the “Time Agents” series. The working title is “The Time Agents: Fast Forward.” In the first book, we explored the era just as WWII was starting and an alternate universe. The current work focuses on the return to the future of the main protagonists. So world building is a key element of the story.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Promotion is the absolute hardest part of writing and self-publishing. After learning that fact the hard way, research was the word of the day. I have built a strategy of using multiple techniques to get the word out. One of my favorite channels is Fiverr. It’s an excellent source for helping in all aspects of releasing a self-published book. But there’s one major issue that you have to look out for. DO YOUR RESEARCH! You can build a good team that way. But don’t ignore the other avenues, such as Press releases and joining and posting your book to reading sites. Many of which have an outlet for your book to be promoted.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
“A writer writes, always.” Quote from “Throw Mama from the Train.”
That’s basically the number one piece of advice I have. Remember not to get bogged down or distracted by getting your book promoted. You’ll lose precious time.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
As a teenager growing up in Pittsburgh, PA, I attended a lecture by non-other than the creator of “Star Trek,” Gene Roddenberry. After the talk, it came time for me to get an autograph for his book. As the last person in line, he asked me if I could give him directions to his hotel. I gave him directions and went on my merry way. As I left the lecture hall, he called out to me and asked if I could walk him to the hotel. I was floored!
During the walk, Roddenberry gave me the most important advice I would receive. He said, “without exception, never give up or be distracted from your goals. No matter what.”
What are you reading now?
I’m in the middle of my second pass of “Project Hail Mary.” Andy Weir is a talented writer, so that is a chance to learn while you read.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep on keeping on! I have several projects in the queue. After I finish book two of the Time Agents. My next book is in preparation and research mode.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d bring four books on surviving on a desert island. As for reading, my writing would keep me distracted for a while. The bottom line is I’d rather live. I can always write stories to entertain myself.
