Interview With Author Samantha Mullins
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Single mother, who loves Anime, and K pop, as well as Asian dramas.
I have been writing since I’ve been young, but when I was young it was mainly just Horror Short stories. I decided one day, when trying to write a full on Horror book, that I started in my younger teen years, that I was just not feeling it anymore with the horror genre. And switched it up to fantasy. Currently I have 2 1/2 books written, only one published at the moment, working on my second books editing (though currently on an editing hiatus).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Heavens Keys is my debut novel. Honestly, like I said in the tell us about yourself section. I have been writing since I was young, but in the horror genre. And honestly, when I decided to ditch the horror genre and go into the fantasy genre, was after reading Stephenie Meyers Twilight series (Don’t Laugh) lol. It made me think, “If she can do it, so can I”. Reading the twilight series also lead me down a rabbit hole, I still haven’t escaped from if you look at my current TBR list lol.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No while writing, I just go with the flow and let it all pour out.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephenie Meyers provided me the urge to write again. But Authors like Julie Kagaway, Chloe Neil, Rachel Caine, Richelle Mead, Jennifer Armentrout, Kelley Armstrong, Cassandra Claire, and Patricia Briggs, amongst a slew of others have influenced me to continue on writing, with the hope of one day being published.
What are you working on now?
What I’m working on now is Under Darkness, Heavens Keys Book Two.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m trying everything I can, on my own. I unfortunately do not have the cash flow to promote my book in the best ways, ADS, Promo sites, etc. So though I’m not very good at it, I make vidoes for tiktok, instagram and post them on my facebook, and my blog on my website.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write, don’t think of anything but the writing itself. Do editing and any fixing after its all complete. Then find either an editor if you can afford it, or edit yourself, and edit the heck out of it, even if you go through thirty drafts.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
like I said in my advice to new authors… Just write, don’t edit don’t fix nothing, just write, it will only complicate things if you try to edit and fix things during the first draft. Stop doing that! This is why it is called a first draft, get your thoughts down, get your story out, then go back and fix what needs to be fixed.
What are you reading now?
Iron Traitor – Julie Kagawa (I’ve been seriously slacking on my TBR list lol)
What’s next for you as a writer?
Well, when I get out of my funk, I will continue to edit Under Darkness, then I will get Lightfall Rising- Heavens Keys Book Three finished with the first draft. I know the direction I want the series to go, and can’t wait to see how it unfolds.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
3 or 4 books oh NO! Can I take 5? If so, I would say Anna Todd’s After series, that would keep me occupied for a long time.
