Interview With Author Sarah Crowne
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Sarah Crowne, an author, lawyer, and lifelong lover of stories. Growing up, I was constantly surrounded by books. That passion carried me through years of writing short stories, poetry, and then, novels. I’ve studied writing under the UCLA Writer’s Program, as well as under the personal mentorship of American screenwriter, director, screenwriting teacher and author, John Truby. So far, I’ve published one novel, All These Threads of Time, a time-travel murder mystery set in the 1980s, as well as a Writer’s Self Help Book – Rebel Writers: The Genius Behind the Pen, where I write about my tours of historic author homes, reflecting on the trials and triumphs of their lives and what we can learn from them. I’m currently working on my next novel, a fantasy thriller about fame, family, and uncovering deadly secrets. Writing allows me to explore complex emotions, dive into fascinating worlds, and connect with readers in meaningful ways—something I’m incredibly grateful for every day.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel, All These Threads of Time, follows fifteen-year-old Sylvie Mitchell as she races against time to solve her sister’s murder. The inspiration for All These Threads of Time came from my fascination with how small moments can ripple through time and change everything. I’ve always loved stories that weave mystery and suspense with complex family dynamics, and I wanted to explore those themes through Sylvie’s journey. I also wanted to explore grief, and how we can heal from it. The 1980s setting was both a nostalgic and purposeful choice—it’s such a vibrant, iconic decade, full of cultural shifts and possibilities. Also, given the lack of various technologies used today to solve crimes, it made solving the murder mystery that much harder in this decade.
At its heart, this story is about love, loss, and the lengths we’ll go to protect the people we care about, even if it means rewriting the past. It’s a blend of my love for time travel and my deep curiosity about how the past shapes who we are.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I do structure my plots before writing. I also get up at 5 am to write each day, to ensure I get my writing time in before the day starts.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many! I read a ton and love so many authors, both historic and current. Some of my favorite historic writers include Nathanial Hawthorne, C.S. Lewis, Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott. Current fiction writers . . . I adore Matt Haig, Michiko Aoyama, and so many others. I love Ray Bradbury’s works as well. Honestly, it would be impossible to list them all, but I try to keep up with my Goodreads Account. You can find many of my recommendations there or on my Amazon Author Page.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a fantasy thriller about fame, family, and dangerous secrets. I expect to publish it in 2025.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have to admit, I’m still learning and growing in this area. My biggest advice is to research and try everything, to see what works best for you and your books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read, read, and read some more. Study the craft of writing. Take classes. Meet other writers. But mostly, write, Don’t be afraid to write and don’t be afraid to share it. Creative works are meant to be shared. It’s incredibly liberating to do so.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Everything John Truby ever wrote or told me during our mentorship classes! Also, write fast. Make sure you’re starting the story where the conflict or emotional tension begins. Know your opponent’s plan. It’s what drives the action.
What are you reading now?
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. Gorgeous writing and amazing premise. There’s a great Amazon show for the book as well.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Right now I’m writing and planning my release of my newest fantasy thriller. I’m also exploring new story ideas, heading to book signings and events for All These Threads of Time, and continuing to learn about myself and the craft of writing. Writing is such an ever-evolving journey for me, and I’m excited to keep challenging myself with stories that push boundaries and connect with readers on a deeper level. Last but not least, I’m continuing my Substack, A Busy Lady, where I write about the writing journey, share motivational and inspirational work, interview other authors and so much more! You can find updates for everything I am up to by following me on social media or at my website, sarahcrownebooks.com.
