Scaleshifter by Shelby Hailstone Law
Caleb never wanted to join the army. And he certainly didn’t want to be turned into a dragon. But when he doesn’t understand how his new body works and can barely make a move without being watched by the wizard who took his humanity, how is he supposed to escape before he can be turned into a weapon of war?
His one shot at freedom is a blue dragon, one who was born a dragon and has a deep distrust of humans for their violence and cruelty. It’s everything Caleb can do to overcome his own biases about what he thought dragons were, and now, his survival depends on his new friend doing the same.
This coming-of-age story isn’t just a tale of transformation and magic. It’s a story about survival, and it’s a story of healing through community, understanding, and found family. And if you like this one, there’s more to read from the world of scaleshifters and dragons!

Author Bio:
Shelby Hailstone Law grew up in Georgia and spent her childhood reading books, usually tucked away in the loft her mom made for her out of a walk-in closet. She started writing early on and wrote the rough draft of her first published book at fourteen, between marching band practices.
Now, two decades later, she is constantly chasing her dreams (and writing them down as often as she can remember them when she wakes up)! After working for a book publisher after college, she went into publishing for herself and has spent the last ten years working hard to establish herself as a self-published author. She loves to go to signings, festivals, and libraries, though her favorite thing to do is to go to schools as an invited speaker and help nurture the love of creativity in kids who are the same age she was when she started writing.
Her Scaleshifter coming-of-age series propelled her to success in 2021, but she loves to try her hand at different genres and new ideas, most recently with a paranormal romance in 2024 called “Death Flirts Back.” But she loves being known as a dragon writer, and you can usually catch her wearing dragon earrings or a scaly dress at her events!
When Shelby isn’t writing, you can catch her playing video games, watching (and sometimes DMing or playing) D&D, or chasing around her two young kids. Life is never dull at her place!
