Interview With Author Scott Wasilewski
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a new author, excitedly waiting for the release of my debut novel in October 2023. I have been writing for years, alongside a full time job in a law firm. I'm constantly getting inspired for new stories whether it's while travelling or just in every day life! So I thought, 'Let's make a go of this!' and I now focus on my writing like a true 'job', even though it's most definitely a passion!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Shadows of Sacrifice: Only the Sinful will Survive. My inspiration came from all of my travels to the castles of the UK, plus the sheer magnitude that is the Game of Thrones books and series. How could you not be inspired?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing out of the ordinary really! I certainly have habits/routines, but it's all pretty standard, such as writing at certain times of the day, some healthy energy food, and caffeine!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
George R. R. Martin and his creation of the Song of Fire and Ice series is right up there. As a child, JK Rowling and Harry Potter instilled an early passion of writing in me.
What are you working on now?
Spreading the word about my debut novel, Shadows of Sacrifice! Alongside that, I'm working on a shorter fantasy novel with the working title of 'Divided by Fire' – this will contain much more 'standard' fantasy things like magic and dragons!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is something I'm still discovering, but I've found Facebook and their boosted posts very useful for connecting with potential readers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing. Write for yourself and anything else is a bonus. It's such a wonderful hobby, people should not be discouraged by things like the time it takes to write something, or worrying about its quality at an early stage, or panicking about negative reviews/feedback. At the end of the day, it's a personal journey, and you should enjoy every step.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing! Even after your first book is done, write your next, and the next, and the next. Getting a catalogue of books is ultimately the key to success as each book markets the others and introduces new fans all the time.
What are you reading now?
The Dragonbone Chair by Tad Williams, and The Frozen Flame by Paul J. Bennett
What’s next for you as a writer?
Promote Shadows of Sacrifice to the ends of the earth, complete Divided by Fire, and then start work on the hundreds of other story ideas I have!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Game of Thrones by George RR Martin, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (because it's one I keep meaning to start!), and is it wrong to say my own, Shadows of Sacrifice? I'm so proud of actually completing and publishing a book, I think I'd need it to remind me that we can do anything we put our mind to!
