Interview With Author Shantel Patt
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a wife, mother, educator, and author who believes deeply in creativity, intention, and choosing joy—even in chaotic seasons. I’ve spent over fourteen years in education, and my experiences in and out of the classroom heavily influence my writing. I’ve written multiple books across different genres, including educator-focused nonfiction, relatable classroom storytelling, and creative coloring books designed to bring calm and confidence to readers of all ages.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Class Is In Session: Teaching Through the Chaos. It was inspired by the very real, often unseen moments teachers experience every day—the highs, the heartbreaks, the laughter, and the resilience it takes to keep showing up. I wanted to create something honest and relatable that educators could see themselves in and feel understood by.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write in bursts rather than long, scheduled sessions. Some of my best ideas come while reflecting after a long day or during quiet early mornings. I also keep notes everywhere—my phone, notebooks, random scraps of paper—because inspiration usually hits when I’m not actively trying to write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m influenced by authors who write with heart and authenticity—stories that feel human and grounded. Books that blend honesty, humor, and emotional truth have always resonated with me, especially those that give voice to everyday experiences in meaningful ways.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a new book titled Mommy, Interrupted: The Art of Starting Over Daily. It’s written for moms who feel like life keeps knocking them down and are craving permission—and practical tools—to begin again, even on the hardest days.
The book explores the idea of reinventing yourself in small, meaningful ways. Each chapter focuses on a different “restart button” for moments when you feel overwhelmed or lost, including resetting your patience, focus, finances, boundaries, and joy.
What makes this project especially meaningful to me is its blend of raw, often funny personal stories, accessible neuroscience around habit-resetting, and quick daily “resets” that can be done in ten minutes or less. My goal is to remind moms that starting over doesn’t require a complete overhaul—sometimes it just takes a pause, a breath, and a small intentional shift.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social media has been my most effective tool, particularly platforms where storytelling and connection matter. I focus on building genuine relationships with readers through content that feels real, helpful, and encouraging rather than overly promotional.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t wait for perfection before you begin. Start where you are, write what matters to you, and trust that your voice has value. Consistency and authenticity matter far more than chasing trends.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Create from a place of purpose, not pressure.” That mindset has helped me stay grounded and connected to why I write in the first place.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently juggling a few reads, depending on my mood. I’m making my way through Zero Tolerance by James Patterson for its fast pace and tension, savoring Bound by Fire by Elli J. Morrigan for its emotional depth, and completely immersed in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. I love getting lost in richly built worlds and compelling character arcs, and this mix of stories keeps my TBR pile—and my imagination—very happy.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue expanding my catalog with books that uplift, inspire, and entertain, while staying true to my mission of creating work that feels intentional and soul-centered.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d bring Pleasure by Eric Jerome Dickey for its emotional depth and unforgettable storytelling, anything from the Fourth Wing series for the escape, intensity, and dragons, and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fck* by Mark Manson for perspective, humor, and a much-needed mindset reset when island life gets real.
