Interview With Author Sharon Curcio
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written two lyric plays, both were stage-performed and one was made into an oratorio,
plus four screenplays (two with co-writer Diana Saenz), this Asayi novel with volume two underway.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Asayi Recovers the Imperial Sword” is volume two in the series and will be published in 2026. The time period covered in this novel is 1441-1443.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No don’t think so, but am very picky about verbs.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Milton’s “Paradise Lost” is a stunner, and his Satan character is four hundred years ahead of Milton’s time. As a secondary English teacher, I usually taught American Literature and really admire Thoreau, Whitman, Faulkner, Tennessee Williams, Steinbeck, Flannery O’ Conner, Ambrose Bierce, Barbara Tuchman, and Lisa See. You know how it gets… the list goes on (and changes everday).
What are you working on now?
The second Asayi novel “Asayi Recovers the Imperial Sword” (1441-1443).
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still trying to figure this out!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Stay with what you know, and feel passionately about. “Asayi” and my character Joan in the oratorio “Contemplating Fire” are both 15th century women, and both are fighters. One is fictional and the other is not. Delve deeply into your protagonists and antagonists. Have a visceral sense of what makes them tick and move. Feel their feelings, and doubts and fears then unleash the truly felt on your page and watch it light up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Get into your flow. Don’t force yourself to do anything. Forced work yields an inauthentic result. Keep the monkey off your own back.
What are you reading now?
Preparing for volume three and reading “The Onin War” by H.Paul Varley
What’s next for you as a writer?
Volume 3 of Asayi of course!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I like books with mesmerizing language and out of the box ideas: Homer, Milton and Shakespeare seem to remain thrilling and non-boring.
