Interview With Author Sharon Littlefield Chandler
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a lifelong Louisiana resident who enjoys writing, painting, quilting, geneology, travel, family, friends, pets and especially fishing! I retired from the Louisiana civil service system as an addictions treatment clinic manager and counselor. My first novel is set in Louisiana and reflects many aspects of the state including geographic diversity, cuisine, culture, and folklore.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My novel is entitled Hemingway Castle and the Communion of Saints. It was inspired by my 30-year career in social services, diverse interests, life experiences and an active imagination. Initially, the book was going to be about a serial killer within the public assistance network. Over time, the story took on a life of its own and evolved into a Southern gothic paranormal thriller.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I will write and edit all night long, often falling asleep with my laptop on. It’s not unusual to wake up and find that I have run the cursor down many pages. When I’m writing, I prefer to have my dog snuggled next to me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I fell in love with Dean Koonce’s character, Odd Thomas, who has the same sort of gifts as my character,Hemingway. I love the cheeky characters created by John Sandford and Janet Evanovich. The Sookie Stackhouse novels, by Charlaine Harris, inspired by me with their magic and whimsy. I draw divine inspiration from the Holy Bible. Thomas Harris thrills me!
What are you working on now?
I’m currently writing Hemingway Castle and the Mississippi Mudslide. Many of the characters from my first novel will return in subsequent adventures.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am learning book promotion. I’m on Substack, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I am active scheduling public book readings, which is my favorite way to promote. I love meeting the people who are reading my book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find a mentor who gets you and your genre. Someone who is truly vested in your success will READ YOUR WORK! Don’t work with a project manager or agent who isn’t familiar with your stories, voice, and ability.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s okay to step back from writing when you need a break. Take care of your physical, mental and spiritual health. Surround yourself with positive people but be your own best friend.
What are you reading now?
Hemingway Castle and the Mississippi Mudslide! I also enjoy short stories and essays on Substack. The Write Kit Newsletter by Liz Dubleman is one of my favorites.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to expand my reader base and see Hemingway Castle on the big screen.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d have to have Hemingway Castle along, but I try to find books that contained all the works by a specific author! I’s gave to have Harry Potter, Sookie Stackhouse, The Lord of the Rings, Thomas Harris and I try to sneak in my NIV Bible, too.
