Interview With Author Shaun Fitzgerald
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am Shaun Fitzgerald, and I write under S.S. Fitzgerald. I am a veteran and horror extraordinaire. Born and raised in Nevada, I now call Tallahassee, Florida home. I write horror stories, thrillers, and science-fiction, grounding my works in reality with actual experiences from travels. I am the author of A Fold to Extinction, Sinner’s Pass, and my debut series, Alone Together.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Alone Together released June 25, 2025. I always wanted to write a zombie story. As a young man I loved all the zombie media I grew up with. Games like the Resident Evil series, movies like 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, these were iconic movies. Then the book, World War Z came out, and eventually The Remaining series by DJ Molles. I knew I wanted to write something epic in a similar universe. Then in 2020 I was a commander of an infantry unit during COVID. My experience during my command shaped the story and many of the events within Alone Together are heavily grounded in those moments.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My colleagues make fun of me for using PowerPoint for my notes, but it works! I really love using notebooks and notecards but putting it all together in my office takes up a lot of room. I found that a simple PowerPoint provides all the versatility I need and is a virtual duplication of my notecards. It also allows me to rearrange things, search, and group cards together.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Michael Crichton is one of my all-time favorite authors. I love how he always has that “expert” character that provides insight in the story. I also admire Dean Koontz for his horror formula. I also have to give a big head nod to DJ Molles. His work encouraged me to take the plunge and write my first novel.
What are you working on now?
I am elbow deep in writing the Alone Together series. When I wrote the first entry, I never stopped. I wanted consistency. I hope this encourages readers as they will know the series is active and will have regular updates. As of this moment, I’m drafting the fourth book. As I write, my Beta readers have book two, and my editor has book three!
Outside of Alone Together, I have several other projects I have kept on the backburner. I do have a stand alone horror story I keep coming back to because I want to attempt a vampire story. Another cult-based horror story because I can’t stop thinking of what I did right and what I did wrong in Sinner’s Pass. I also have a Grimdark Fantasy I keep tinkering with.
If that doesn’t sound like enough, I write short stories and share them for free on my website. Some of these stories I read on my podcast, Birds with Words, and some become part of the universe my books are set in.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website www.ssfitzgerald.net is the hub for all my products and includes my blog.
My newsletter has the best offerings as you’ll get chances at free books upon a novel’s release, and it is tied to my podcast Birds with Words. You can find my newsletter and other social links on my LinkTree, linktr.ee/s.s.fitzgerald.writing
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Do it. You can dream and fantasize about writing all day, but until you start, it’s just a dream. Put words to paper.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
After listening to my complain about situations I was experiencing, a buddy simply said “it’s lonely at the top.”
What are you reading now?
Sacred Valley: Betrayal by Shaun Jooste.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to get the first four books of Alone Together out for my readers. I owe them the base story before I start creating spinoffs.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I feel like the right answer is a series of survival books. But I understand the spirit of the question is what would keep me entertained during my isolated time.
1. Jurassic Park
2. Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm
3. Alone Together (because I need to know what I can improve when I get home!)
