Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Shayla Hyde. I am twenty years old, and I live in Alabama, USA. I’ve published one book, titled “Sunny Eve”, and I’m in the process of writing another.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Sunny Eve” is about a girl named Evelyn (Eve) Stanton who was born with an extraordinary sun-shaped birthmark, and it’s not until she moves to a new city with her father and discovers the existence of undead beings that she realizes just how special her birthmark truly is. I’ve always loved the science fiction/fantasy genre, and with “Sunny Eve”, I was able to create my own fantasy world.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to act out some of my scenes and read my dialogue aloud. Yes, it looks absolutely ridiculous sometimes, but with certain scenes, it feels necessary. It helps me make sure I add the needed details.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Alyson Noel, Kristin Cast, Lisa Jane Smith, Steven King, J.K Rowling, Stephanie Meyer, and so many more amazing authors. I grew up reading their books, and it is because of them that I eventually started writing my own.
What are you working on now?
I’m very excited about my current work-in-progress! This one is going to take a step back from the fantasy world and focus on a real-life epidemic. It’s a Mystery/Thriller that follows a young girl who is kidnapped. It should be available in 2020.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
awesomegang.com is pretty great, but I usually make posts on my social media accounts, mainly on my Instagram @shaylathewriter. It’s a brand new account, but I’m slowly gaining new, wonderful supporters.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m still a new author myself, but my advice would be to “write what makes you happy”. Write about what you are passionate about. Not everyone will like it, but that doesn’t matter! Write something that, when it is complete, you can hold in your hands and smile about. Write something that will touch your soul and make you genuinely happy. Don’t force yourself to write something that “everyone else” would be “more” interested in. Write about your own interests, and do it fiercely.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Appreciate The Little Things, Because They Are Not So Little.” This doesn’t relate to writing, but for me, it is important to remember. Too often, the little things that make life great are taken for granted.
What are you reading now?
“Fallen” by Lauren Kate. I’m only a few chapters in, and I am OBSESSED.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to continue pursuing my dreams and learn more about it on the way. One day at a time, one story at a time.
