Interview With Author Sky Gold
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an author, writer and lover of all things delicious, fun and courageously life affirming. I look to my gorgeous husband, my fun, whimsical kids, my loyal friends, my sweet Russian Blue Cat, and the stars themselves for my heavenly inspiration.
I’m currently writing The Sable Riders series – a 6 book saga spanning a universe. I’ve just published Book 1 – Stars on Fire’ – and I’m about to publish Book 2 – Stars at Dusk’.
I’ve also written other books under another name, but that’s that another story for another day!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
‘Stars on Fire’ was conceived after yearnin’ for more romance in some of my favourite reads over the years – and the idea of combining well researched scifi with real life relationships – and their ups and downs.
I’m also drawn to understanding where our current climate challenges will take us in the future and so I explored this theme in the series as well.
My closest inspiration has been The Expanse series – books and TV.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always write to music. As a result my prose and cadence is strongly influenced by some of the most artists. From Coldplay and Maroon 5 to Beyonce, Post Malone, Shawn Mendes, Pharell, Janet, Sade, Lizzo, etc.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many – from James SA Corey, to Kristen Ashley, Jojo Moyes, Zoey Draven, David Baldacci – I read wide variety of genres and each of these writers have the ability to draw me into a world so believable – yet one I can get lost in, and can’t seem to get off my mind!
What are you working on now?
Stars at Dusk – Book 2 in The Sable Riders series.
“She’s sassy-smart-strong. A genius, generous, confident scientist developing a groundbreaking propulsion technology that’s attracted the attention of The Sable Group, and Kage Sable, to be exact.
He’s a master builder, an ex-warrior, a kick-ass engineer with sexy nerd energy and her new ‘boss’. His shop is responsible for an enviable fleet of high-tech corvettes, luxury flyers and racing pinnaces – helping to cement the Sable Riders’ dominance across Pegasi.
Assured she’s the woman for him, Kage is determined to make Harlow his. He strongly believes every superwoman needs a superman. Unfortunately, she needs to be more convinced. She’s got a bad history with men. All she wants to do is focus on her work that could shift the balance of power in the Pegasi System.
She’s wary of Kage’s full-on thrust at life and love and isn’t sure she’s ready for that much intensity yet. But he slowly draws her in, one delicious moment at a time.
From subterranean speakeasies, sunken casinos and ancient ruins to fighting dens and exquisite eateries, Kage takes Harlow on dizzying flights of pure bliss across Eden II to convince her he’s light years from the ‘lame, always running game’ losers of her past. Instead, he’s a real man with strong convictions and the best intentions, who believes in an impossible love.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Using book promotion sites such as Awesome Gang and advertising on Amazon – because that’s where my target audience is already focused and ready to buy. Social media is more a tick in the box for me, and has very low conversion – but it pays to be still present.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Take your time conceiving the world you’re creating. Write ideas down, toss around new language and cadences of speech, listen to music, and observe people closely. We humans are so different that each of us is a fount of insight and concepts.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Sleep on it.
Whatever is worrying, mulling, frustrated about or anxious about, sleep on it. It’s always better in the morning.
What are you reading now?
The Complete Sherlock Holmes collection by Arthur Conan Doyle for a classic touch. Also, ‘When Women Ruled the World: Six Queens of Egypt’ AND ‘Finding Me’ – Viola Davis.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More of The Sable Riders!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Help
Anything by Frederick Forsyth
The Giver of Stars – Jojo Moyes
Shadow & Bone series – Leigh Bardugo
