Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve just released my eighth novel, but have several short stories and a novella published as well. I was born in Sydney, Australia, but am living in central California now, in the beautiful town of Pacific Grove at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
War and Money. This is the first book in a series. I was inspired to write it because, as the title implies, wars are generated mostly for money, something I personally find appalling. That general theme is woven into this book, but with aliens, battles, and cool fighter ships.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to be working on several stories at one time, working on one for a while, and then switching. When I reach a particular point in one story though, I will usually concentrate only on that one.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I really like Hugh Howey’s writing style, but also the classics like Asimov. And of course, the story telling of J.K. Rowling!
What are you working on now?
Book 2, War and Disorder, to follow War and Money. Plus another novel that I’m about 2/3 of the way through. And I’m resurrecting an old YA novel where the ending fell apart, so I need to fix that.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Other than Awesome Gang? Bargain Booksy is excellent.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t self-doubt. Keep at it, attend writing conferences, workshops, join a critique group, and generally hang out with other authors. We’re solitary creatures when writing, so make sure to get some socialization and feedback.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You’re worth it. Whatever ‘it’ is.
What are you reading now?
Steinbeck. Since moving to the Monterey area, where Steinbeck lived, I have a new appreciation for his work. And there are stories of his that I’ve never read!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Finish the series I’m working on, and finish every other story I’ve started. And promotion, of course!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Anything by Steinbeck. Harry Potter, Lost City by Clive Cussler.
